Rock & Roll vs U-Shape — Which Layout Suits Your Campervan?
Choosing the right seating-bed layout is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in your campervan build. Two of the most popular setups are the rock & roll bed and the U-shape seating/bed layout. Both have their benefits, but depending on how you travel, live and store gear, one may suit you far better than the other.
Rock & Roll Seating Beds
A rock & roll bed is a seat during the day that folds out or slides to become a bed at night.
Benefits

Quick and compact: easily converts from seating to sleeping with minimal effort.

Maintains a large uninterrupted floor space when the bed is stowed as seating.

Ideal when you prioritize sleeping space and want a large flat bed area.
Things to consider

Seating area may be narrower or less sociable compared to U-shape arrangements.

If you run a pop-top and use the bed upstairs, you’re using the lower bed area just for storage or occasional sleep.

Some rock & roll beds may reduce under-seat storage because of the mechanism.
U-Shape Seating Beds
A U-shape layout means seating wraps around three sides of the lounge area, typically around the rear and both side walls of the van. That seating then converts or extends into a bed when needed.

Lots of under-seat storage because the benches run along the van walls.

Things to consider

When converted into a bed, you may sacrifice some floor space or your seating may become the bed permanently.
- The U-shape may complicate installation of other furnishings (kitchen units, fridge location) because the rear bench runs the full width.
